A perfect power solution for medical ventilation systems
The EXM80 can be used worldwide by exchanging the different input plugs which are standard supplied with the unit. Furthermore this wall-plug adapter can easily turn into a so-called desktop version.
A unique baby is born
Powerbox is introducing the Medline 100 series including a 100 W open frame unit as well as a 80 W wall plug adaptor, both model intended for feeding of medical ventilation equipment.
The converter technology is unique. Both models are sharing the same basic fly-back topology with an ultra low component count, meaning high efficiency as well as high reliability in a very small format. Both units are setting new standards. The OFM100 100W open frame by it’s 2’ by 4’ footprint and the EXM80 with its 80W in a wall-plug adaptor.
The shape and exterior design of the EXM80 wall-plug adaptor is unique as well. In the past an external power supply was just a piece of black plastic hidden on the floor. Powerbox has used the well known industrial designer, Ulf Hanses, who has managed to create a power supply that looks and feels just as professional as the medical equipment it’s feeding.
The EXM80 can be used worldwide by exchanging the different input plugs which are standard supplied with the unit. Furthermore this wall-plug adapter can easily turn into a so-called desktop version.
Medical ventilation applications
Applications in the ventilation area requires in many time a peak loads for powering the turbine. The Medline 100 provides the flexibility to manage many different kinds of peak loads. Depending on the height, the duration and the frequency of the peak loads our engineers can trim the unit to your flavour.
But there are more reasons why this unit is so perfect for ventilation applications.
The power level of the Medline 100 is meeting many ventilations applications. The open frame OFM100 can deliver 100W and 80W without additional cooling. The adapter version EXM 80 delivers continuously 60 to 70W depending on the output voltage. Furthermore the Medline 100 is a Class II medical approved power supply. This means that it doesn’t need an earth connection to meet it’s specification. This is a major benefit for situations were a safety earth is not always available e.g. private homes.
The power supply is crucial in Ventilation equipment
Modern ventilators are electronically controlled by a small embedded system to allow exact adaptation of pressure and flow characteristics to an individual patient's needs.
A positive pressure ventilator which uses a turbine to push the air/oxygen mixture through the ventilator, may also be equipped with monitoring and alarm systems for patient-related parameters (e.g. pressure, volume, and flow) and ventilator function (e.g. air leakage, power failure, mechanical failure), backup batteries, oxygen tanks, and remote control.
Without a reliable power source all these functions will not work.
- Life-critical system
Mechanical ventilation is typically used in acute settings such as in the Intensive care unit for a short period of time during a serious illness. It may be used at home or in a nursing or rehabilitation institution if patients have chronic illnesses that require long-term ventilation assistance e.g. acute lung injury, apnea with respiratory arrest, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), acute respiratory acidosis.
Because the failure of a mechanical ventilation system may result in death, it is classed as a life-critical system, and precautions must be taken to ensure that mechanical ventilation systems are highly reliable. This includes their power supply provision.
- Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB)
For the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (pauses in breathing), hypopneas (reduction in airflow) or snoring a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine can be used at home of the patient. The CPAP machine delivers a stream of prescribed compressed air. Given that sleep apnea is a chronic health issue and doesn't go away, ongoing care is needed to maintain CPAP therapy. This means that for travelling portable equipment is required. A class II power source with the flexibility of worldwide use is the most desired solution, because a proper earth connection is not always guaranteed. Because of the ongoing therapy the equipment including the power supply need to be reliable and safe with a long expected lifetime.
Professional expertise
Our design team behind the Medline 100 series has been designing fly-back topology exclusively during the last 35 years. The two series features the fly-back topology driven to an excellence in all design aspects. The circuit design of these units cannot be found in application notes from control circuit (PWM) manufactures. To provide an increased efficiency our propriety consists of special and unique technologies of making the power transformer. The results are that the Medline 100 series is optimized in EMC, offers very low leakage current, high power efficiency and low component count. There are nothing similar available on the market today
Any manufacturer of medical equipment including electronics is aware that EMC is a major challenge. Two units that individually fulfil the EMC requirements may create unwanted emission when connected to the application. Ventilation equipment normally includes motors, compressors, step-motor drivers that all generates conducted and radiated emissions. Powerbox engineers are available for instant support in solving any such EMC issues.
Safety and Reliability first
To meet the size requirements it would be obvious to use a resonant technology. For several reasons we decided differently and we have used a proven front edge fly-back design with low component count instead. This enables Powerbox to offer a solution with an extreme high MTBF and high efficiency. But there is more.
The Medline 100 features an intelligent over temperature protection that automatically adjusts the available output power to the temperature conditions of the power transformer. The power transformer and the opto couplers are the two most important components in all AC/DC power supplies as they are the isolation barrier and especially in medical AC/DC power supplies to provide increased isolation and patient safety. The intelligent over temperature protection makes sure that the transformer is always operating within its safe temperature range.
Any power supply without an over temperature protection of the transformer can occasionally run the transformer under too hot conditions and in worst case provide live AC at the output of the power supply.
Of course the Medline 100 series is IEC60601-1 medical approved.
Inside or outside?
The two models give you the choice to either integrate the OFM100 into your ventilation equipment or to use the EXM80 as a wall-plug or desk-top adaptor
The EXM80 is delivered with exchangeable plug for Europe, USA and UK in one box. This makes it possible for you to market your product globally with only one version of the power supply.
The standard colour options are shiny white or piano finish black. What is your choice?
